Lots of people say they would love to be paying millions of dollars in
taxes because it would mean that they must be making millions. But just
because you earn big bucks doesn't mean that you aren't going to have
some run ins with the taxman (and woman) or that you will pay when
presented with the bill!
Most of this info was gleaned from the tax files of Glenn Dunphy
(Toronto North Taxation Services Office). One of Glenn's hobbies was
keeping a list of prominent Canadian personalities who were in trouble
with the taxman (and woman). Whenever he got a name and details on to
his list the name went. For titillating talk at Tuesday afternoon teas
I guess. Anyway, on to our tax tale.
Now, when ordinary Canadians making ordinary salaries have tax troubles
well, often, it is understandable. They have limited funds so access to
expert tax assistance is often not in the picture. Not that this is a
vote for the expert tax advisers for they too can give bad advice.

But when the general has tax troubles can the foot soldiers be far
behind?
Apparently not.
Because according to the allegations of Mr. Dunphy author and goalie
extrodinaire Ken Dryden (now the Honourable Ken). At one time had a
small personal tax debt. Which he paid no doubt. But when the General's
right arm has a tax travail...
Next on the list is the always honourable (though not an MP) Patrick
Burns. Now Pat did not have a tax debt per se. Nope. According to ex
tax employee Mark Dos Reis our man Pat, a former police officer, was
delinquent in the filing of some of his Goods and Services Tax returns.
A no no all the same. But it would have been considered much worse if
he had still been an officer of the law.
Long after his playing days had ended Leaf All star defenceman Borje
Salming had a tax debt in the area of $80,000 Canadian. But it wasn't
his fault. Being a smart guy he had deferred part of his salary 'til
after his playing days were over. The Leaf's messed up the reporting of
it and this resulted in Borje's tax debt. Fortunately for him it was a
paper error and was reversed.
And you know what? Here we're just getting warmed up and we just ran
out of room. As a result, this most interesting of weekly CCRA SOTW Tax
Tales is going to have to be continued next week!
