The Toronto organization won't be too affected by the lockout because we
live in a hockey mad town. For those cities that aren't hockey mad, the fans
will stay away en masse like I did after the 1994 mlb strike, as a matter of
fact, I still haven't been to a j's game since the strike.

I predict 1 or 2 teams in the nhl will fold during the 05-06 season.

Which ones do you think will fold?

In no particular order:
Atlanta, Carolina, Florida, Pheonix, Anaheim, Columbus . Pick 2!

I can't see Atlanta or Carolina (or Columbus either, maybe) going anywhere.
But the clock is definitely ticking on Phoenix, Anaheim, Florida, and
Nashville. Maybe even St. Louis, depending on who buys the team. It's really
hard to imagine the Coyotes still playing in Phoenix in three years. Or
Anaheim's new owners being satisfied drawing 8-10,000 a night for very long.

You think 2 teams will fold? Not a chance.
Not next season! Maybe down the road some of the silly located American
teams struggling attendance wise could relocate back to Canadian cities. How
about Quebec and Winnipeg? Now that cost certainty is all but gauranteed in
the NHL maybe we can get some of these teams back where they belong.

now THERE is an intelligent comment! with some sensibility in the payroll
now inevitable for the NHL, teams such as Calgary and Edmonton should be
able to compete and survive. That being said, there is no reason why the Jet
and Nordiques could not survive under the new economic system in the NHL as
well.

I hope the "Bring Back the Jets" ppl are working harder than ever....as a
matter of fact i must go onto their website to see what is new....

Agreed. I miss Winnipeg and Quebec City. Yes, Denver has embraced the
Avalanche (and why not - 2 Cups) but Phoenix clearly has been a mistake.
Quebec City is one of the most beautiful cities in Canada and they were
robbed of the Nords.

Hello?

bring back the jets and nords?

when did the jets leave?
95-96, okay, what was the payroll then?

http://www.andrewsstarspage.com/NHL-Business/average-salary.htm

average was less than 900,000

considering a 24% rollback we are still not back to that 95 - 96 level.
so, the economics that killed the jets would still kill them today,
winnipeg could not support a team with a payroll above 20 mill
its a nice idea, but really, its still not going to happen

With an expected 6-8M in revenue sharing, which was reported by 640
Toronto,
http://www.640toronto.com/news/toronto_sports.cfm?cat=7428218912&rem=13951&red=80121823aPBIny&wids=410&gi=1&gm=toronto_sports.cfm
the 95-96 average payroll could be bumped up to near 26-28M. That looks
like low middle of the current cap.
Not to mention that Winnipeg's economy has unboubtedly grown in the past
10 years. Bring back the Jets.

I am not sure what the Canadian dollar was back in 96, but it's not bad
these days, so that has to help as well.

Winnipeg is a rabid hockey market. What the lack in population, they make
up for in interest and passion. They also have a new arena I believe, so
that has to make things sweeter.

Go Jets.

Not to argue, but if we assume inflation has been about 3% per year
since 1995, money is worth 35% now than in 1995.

Why? So there can be two more ungrateful pissant small market Canadian
clubs to suck on the Leaf Nation teat, while despising and publicly
besmirching them? Pah!
